Consonants/ntawv txiv
Hmong consonants are configured into single (1), double (2), triple (3) and quadruple (4) consonant groups to represent the array of consonant sounds present in the Hmong language. See links below for all consonants.
My consonant books
I suggest starting with the single consonants/ib tug ntawv txiv.
Please see my post, So where do we start? At the beginning, I suppose. It provides far more practical tips about how to use these books in your teaching and learning.
The post, Hmong Language Letters Overview and Consonants, contains a very helpful reference on the single consonant letters of the Hmong language and similarities/differences to English.
The same/same single consonants are a good place to start.
Learning a language is built on exposure to syllables and sounds that create words and words that create sentences.
We start by building exposure. Each consonant book and video here contains high-use Hmong words introduced with their beginning letter, exploring the consonant by itself and in commonly used words.
Included for each letter’s book is a YouTube video of the spoken Hmong. There are 2 pdf downloads: Hmong AND English, Hmong-only. There is much debate about which one is better for language learning. I will leave that decision up to you with these suggested considerations (please see longer post).
Remember, our children often won’t learn Hmong at the rapid pace of English because of exposure. So don’t judge progress by what they say or know but by what you are doing together. Be proud when you read one Hmong book or say one Hmong word. It really does start at the beginning,
